Dreams of a Million Men – The Old Gits

One cold Friday night, hanging out back at the local boozer – The Old Cross Tavern, Hertford, affectionately known as the Old Gits - the McKay brothers and their gang were plotting ways of getting to the World Cup this summer.

“Why don’t we do a song that gets taken up as this year’s football anthem? That way they will fly us out there to perform it at the final”.

“Brilliant Plan everyone cried “

Then the beer took over and as with so many good ideas made between friends whilst clutching a pint or three, they gave this idea no more thought whatsoever…

Until the following day.

It was still there in the fog of their hangover – to reach the world cup Finals what a Dream!! But how? The piggy bank was bust, their dreams had turned to dust they where OLD gits – who would want them anymore – then they thought about the final how the Three lions had roared and they set to work on their plan - and so they began to think about how they could turn their brilliant dream into reality.

First they needed a song – they thought and thought and even considered going back down the Old Gits Pub again ‘Swords Of A Thousand Men’, that’s It!! A 1981 hit by a British medieval punk combo led by Edward Tudor-Pole, it had a great chorus and all the ingredients for a classic football song.

And so it came to pass, a couple of calls to seek approval from the great Ed Tudor-Pole himself and his publishing company, a re-write of the lyrics, a gathering in of favours and before they knew it they were in the studio doing the DO.

The finished product is homage both to the rock music we all love and that great tradition of football songs – a chant able chorus that can be adopted by the terraces – a mix harking back to the time when tunes were tunes and chants were easy.

This is surely the feel-good terrace song for 2010.

So help the McKay’s travel to South Africa, buy the song, tell your friends, start singing it in grounds around the country.
